Wednesday Afternoon Activities

Recall that Wednesday has been planned as a half-day at the ICMS to provide participants with opportunities to network and explore the historic city of Edinburgh together in the afternoon. A number of possible activities are suggested below.

12:30 Packed Lunch

Packed lunches will be made available to collect. Participants are welcome to either eat them at the ICMS, or take them away for afternoon activities.

(A) Tour of the James Clerk Maxwell House, 14 India Street

A tour has been arranged, with tour guide(s) from the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation, starting at 15:00 at 14 India Street, for those interested. James Clerk Maxwell (1831-79) was born in this house at 14 India Street, Edinburgh. In 1993 the Foundation acquired Maxwell’s birthplace. This elegant Georgian house, after period restoration, displays a growing collection of heritage material associated with James Clerk Maxwell, his associates and family circle. (B) Walk to Arthur’s Seat

Possible activity suggestion: a walk to the top of Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano that stands 800 feet over central Edinburgh, giving panoramic views over the city, the Firth of Forth, and distant hills. See Maps and Locations of Interest

(C) Walk exploring Old Town, Royal Mile, Dean Village

13:00 Leaving ICMS with Andrew Burbanks

Possible activity suggestion: a walk, starting at the ICMS and taking-in some of the famous sites in Edinburgh including Greyfriar’s Churchyard, Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, Princes Street and the Scott Monument, and down into the picturesque Dean Village and the Water of Leith. (D) Museums and Galleries

Self-guided

The National Museum of Scotland is located near the ICMS, and not far from the Royal Mile. Other venues of interest include the Writer’s Museum and the National Galleries of Scotland. Further afield, across the Water of Leith, is the National Galleries of Scotland: Modern One housing a modern art collection. See Maps and Locations of Interest
